The issue of overbilling by electric companies, despite the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (NEPRA) reports exposing fraudulent practices, remains a harrowing concern for consumers across Pakistan.

NEPRA’s Alarming Findings:

Recent NEPRA reports highlighted a distressing reality – electric producer companies overbilled a staggering 11 million consumers nationwide. This practice adversely impacts lower-middle-class individuals and those consuming 100-200 units monthly, the most affected demographics.

Exploiting Subsidy Policies:

The government extends subsidies to consumers using less than 200 units. However, electric companies exploited loopholes by delaying meter readings beyond 30 days, denying many rightful subsidy benefits.

Intentional Overbilling:

Reports indicate that in July and August 2023, GEPCO, among other electric companies, intentionally overcharged consumers with late meter readings exceeding the stipulated 30-day period. Shockingly, 1,655,422 consumers fell victim to GEPCO’s delayed meter readings.

Continued Unethical Practices:

Disturbingly, even after NEPRA’s exposé, the situation persists. Complaints abound, citing instances of ongoing delayed meter readings in regions like District Mandi Bahauldin. Consumers report significant delays in meter readings, perpetuating the cycle of overcharging.

Seeking Accountability:

Amidst these egregious practices, a pressing question arises: Who can hold these electric companies accountable? Despite NEPRA’s revelations, these companies continue to exploit consumers.

The plight of overbilling demands immediate attention. Consumers deserve fair treatment and adherence to regulations. Stronger measures, rigorous oversight, and consumer protection policies are imperative to curb these unethical practices and safeguard the rights of every electricity consumer in Pakistan.
