on January 30, 2024, Judge Abul Hassanat declared a verdict sentencing former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 10 years in the cypher case. The decision comes after a lengthy 16-hour hearing that took place on the 29th day and night.
Imran Khan, who was ousted from the Prime Minister’s house in a controversial “Vote of No Confidence” on April 10, 2022, faced allegations related to a foreign conspiracy. Before the vote, Khan had addressed a rally where he waved a paper in front of the people, claiming that the vote of no confidence was part of a foreign plot against him. He stated that the paper contained assurances that “everything will be forgiven if Imran Khan is removed.”
The legal saga intensified in August 2023 when the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered a case against Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Both were subsequently arrested, and after months of legal proceedings, they have now been sentenced to 10 years.
This significant development comes just eight days before the upcoming general elections in 2024. Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), remains one of the most influential and popular parties in the country. The verdict is expected to have far-reaching implications on the political landscape as the nation prepares for the crucial elections.
