The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) made big changes recently. They removed Imran Khan’s name as the Party chairman from the list. Now, there are 175 registered parties with the ECP.
In the latest list released on 24th Dec 2024, PTI is listed in ECP, but the chairman’s name is missing. So, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is now without a leader. In the updated party list Shahbaz Sharif is the party President for PML(N) and Bilawal Bhutto for PPP.
PTI Faces Intra-Party Election Crisis
Following ECP’s directive for PTI to conduct overdue intra-party elections. PTI conducted these elctions and Finally, on 3rd Dec, Barrister Gohar was elected as the new chairman. But later, some party members complained to the ECP about these elections.
Verdict Fallout: PTI Loses Symbol and Leadership
The ECP looked into this case and decided that PTI’s elections were not fair. They declared PTI’s intra-party elections invalid, which means Barrister Gohar is no longer the chairman. The ECP nullified PTI’s intra-party elections, including the removal of their party symbol, the Bat. Consequently, Barrister Gohar’s chairmanship status, gained from the disputed election, was also invalidated.
Nomination Papers for General Elections
Now, Pakistan is heading towards the general election on 8th Feb 2024. All parties, including PTI, PLMN, PPP, and TLP, submitted their nomination papers. The scrutiny process has already begun. PTI has submitted 2434 nomination papers, along with other major parties: PMLN-2134, PPP-1651, and TLP-1478.
Leaderless PTI: Symbolic Shift in General Elections
PTI, being without a leader, will have different election symbols for their candidates in the upcoming general election. It’s a time of change for PTI as they navigate these developments ahead of the big election.
